South Africa were asked to chase in their opening World T20 game against Sri Lanka, which they went into without their captain Faf du Plessis. He could not recover from a hamstring injury in time to play this match. AB de Villiers led in his absence. The other injury concern, Dale Steyn, who was suffering from the same niggle, was included in the XI.
Steyn's availability was a major boost to South Africa, especially because of the generous grass covering on the surface. South Africa included four seamers in their line-up, which meant no place for left-armers Wayne Parnell and Beuran Hendricks. Imran Tahir was the only frontline spinner with JP Duminy to play a secondary role.
Duminy was also expected to bat at No.3 in du Plessis' place with de Villiers coming in below that. Farhaan Behardien slotted in as replacement. Without du Plessis, Sri Lanka's spinners will eye an opportunity to target South Africa's middle order. Dinesh Chandimal said he expects the surface to take turn later on and Sri Lanka have two specialist spinners in Ajantha Mendis and Sachitra Senananyake in their XI, but no Rangana Herath.
This is the first match of the last batch of T20s Mahela Jayawardene and Kumar Sangakkara will play. The pair are retiring from the format after this competition, but will form the cornerstones of Sri Lanka's line-up today.
